The East London Design Show

Since 1994, the first weekend in December has signalled the arrival of the East London Design Show. What began originally as something created by a glass maker and a photographer has become something quite extraordinary. Little did Della Tinsley and Gideon Cleary know what their idea would grow into. It is by no accident that the event takes place in East London, as this is widely regarded as one of the most densely populated artisan areas in the UK, and somewhere where many emerging artists break through into the mainstream. The designers that are chosen to exhibit at the show are all handpicked for the high quality of the items that they produce. The show is designed to profile the cream of UK design talent from those specialising in interiors to those who are hoping to make their mark in the world of fashion design. The show is a launching pad for the very best of new talent looking to make its mark in the world of design.

About the East London Design Show

The show takes place in the heart of London’s iconic East End, in Shoreditch Town Hall. The recently restored hall makes the perfect home for this wonderful show. The area around the hall has become synonymous with design in all its forms. There are many independent and unique boutiques and home-ware outlets. It is also home to London’s biggest flower market, the Whitechapel art gallery and the Geffrye Museum.

The success of the show has led to the ELDS team being asked to choreograph many other design events and commissions around the country. The East London Design Show aims to bring together in one place the very best independent interior, product and jewellery designers all under one roof in one accessible space just before Christmas, allowing people to visit and purchase some of the most unique and original gifts to be found in the city.

Why the Show is Important

The premise of the event is to allow up and coming designers from all areas of design to find a way into the public’s perception. This year there are more than thirty eight new designers set to bring their work into the public domain, all of which are launching new and innovative products that cannot be found anywhere other than at the show. Those who attend the show are in a very unique position of being able to buy items that have yet to make it into the public domain, from designers that have yet to make their name in the marketplace. The gifts and trinkets that are bought during the show could end up being a very unique investment for the future rather than just a novel Christmas gift.

The east London Design Show takes place opens on Thursday 5th December, with an opportunity for late night shopping on Friday 6th. Tickets to the show cost £5.00 with a concessionary ticket price of £3.00 and free entry for children aged sixteen and under. Disabled visitors are granted free entry and the whole show is accessible to those with disabilities.
